Where junior brawlers coming from the general grunt pool still adorn the standard-issue environmental lirihoods, more seasoned veterans have access to less cumbersome personal rebreathers….or simply go without. In some cases, they’re deployed to situations where having an exposed hose sticking out to get snagged on or grabbed at is more detrimental than beneficial to their prolonged health in combat.
In other cases they’re simply an expendable lot and/or from an ill-equipped guild who make do with whatever they can scrounge.
