Description

Dungeon Lab Modular Tile System has a ton of terrain STL files for a super reasonable price ($11 US for their Earlybird-Private Use). I did 3 Pillars for it because I love the system so much. Go and support the project here.

Here’s a stretch goal update they posted.

Alright now onto the detailed review. Full Disclosure here, Dungeon Lab did not commission me to make anything and is not paying me for marketing. I just really liked their stuff and wanted to contribute. I figured if I liked it so much, some of you might too. I know there are a lot of established modular tile systems out there (Dwarven Forge, Dragon Lock, Open Lock, Kraken Studios, Puzzle Lock, Dragon’s Rest, etc…) and I have been meaning to create some tiles and scatter terrain for a while and was debating on which system to go with. I have printed some Dragon’s Rest terrain pieces to use with my own game and even though, I love the style had some trouble with printing the floor tiles and currently only use their wall tiles and doors. The magnetization option for terrain is something I can totally get on board with and many of these systems already have some official or community magnet options but these systems have you swapping out the entire piece via some clip or a magnet clip which can present some printing or practical challenges to swap in game. Furthermore, some like the Kraken system has options for printing entire floor rooms which can work in some instances, but can be a bit of a resource drain and takes away from the modular option. Yes they have magnets and 1×1 tile options too, however when I came across the Dungeon Lab Modular Tile system, everything looked super versatile and easy to print and more importantly the idea of an under tile so you can set up multiple rooms while keeping the fog of war or that you can swap the top face of a tile to present traps, secret doors, portals, spell effects or damaged terrain felt like a perfect solution for what I was looking for with my players so I volunteered to make some pillars for their Kickstarter campaign. Plus it’s already scaled at 32mm. Now I will be making some terrain pieces for this system but will not be offering the under tiles. You will need to (and should want to) purchase those from Dungeon Lab. The pricing for their Kickstarter is beyond reasonable. Other systems have asked for $50 for similar or less STL files and they are only asking for $11. IMO they are super undervaluing the project but since many in the community have already chosen and printed a particular system already, I acknowledge that their may be less of a utilitarian desire to support and print a completely different system. But many in the community have only been printing minis or scatter terrain. If you still have a need for modular terrain tiles, I would encourage you to go with Dungeon Lab. Like I said, I have seen and backed other tile systems myself and this one is the one I wish I would have already printed the wall tiles I already have in my collection. Plus it’s obvious they are into more systems than D&D and have created this system with that in mind. Dungeon Bowl and Hero Quest being the ones cited. As always, thank you for supporting my art, giving me feedback and for just being a super cool community to talk to. Please have a look at the Kickstarter and let me know what you think.
